Game music brought to artistic levels for those with a penchant for cool experimental retro electronic.
Emulsion is an electronic outfit manned by Nathan Koch, an avid fan of 8-bit game music of his youth. When one usually thinks of electronic music, most ponder the dance-friendly fodder that emanates within many clubs across the globe. Koch, however, takes his work to a level common in the early video games to create a smooth electronic vista. Additionally, the music is a nod towards early soundtrack filler music found in ‘80s independent films such as Liquid Sky or Diva, particularly with the opening track, “LeftRightLeftRight” and “Balloons and Centipedes.” A subtle sense of melancholy is woven within the tracks “King of 1998” and “Smeared Bus Window.” The title track, “Blue Sky Objective” delivers almost indecipherable spoken words, which are created as musical notes rather than as something utilized for lyrical content. If a DJ were seeking something retro space age to add to the play list, this track, as well as “All Robots on Sale!” would most likely fit the bill. There is a sense of a beat even if they are miles away from artists such as VNV Nation or Apoptygma Berzerk.
Although Koch is no stranger to electronic music, his love for this style is evident in these recorded tracks. The music itself is experimentally gentle and reflective, but definitely not for the average electronic music fan. Blue Sky Objective is the type of work that would appeal to those with a penchant for artistic musical endeavors where their music must paint a sonic landscape for them. - Mike Ventarola
